EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM C148 standard. This standard describes the determination of the relative optical delay associated with the annealing state of glass containers.
Two alternative test methods are covered as follows:
Test Method A is useful for detecting delays less than 150 nm, while Test Method B is useful for detecting delays less than 565 nm.
The apparent temper number determined by these test methods depends primarily on the magnitude and distribution of the residual stress in the glass, the thickness of the glass (optical path length at the grading point), and the composition of the glass. For all ordinary soda-lime silica bottle glass compositions, the effect of the composition is negligible. In examining the bottom of a vessel, the thickness of the glass can be taken into account defining a true temper number T using the formula R, in terms of the apparent temper number, TA, and the bottom thickness, t : TR= TA(0.160/t ) where t is in inches or TR= TA(4.06/ t ) where t is in millimeters. This thickness should be measured where there is maximum visible lag. Interpretation of the actual or apparent temper number requires practical experience with the particular article being evaluated.
