The ASTM C411 standard covers the determination of the performance of commercial sizes of both block and pipe forms of thermal insulation materials when exposed to simulated hot surface application conditions. The term hot surface performance refers to a simulated in-use temperature test with the heated test surface in a horizontal position.
This test method primarily refers to high temperature insulations applicable to hot side temperatures exceeding 150°F (66°C). It is used for materials such as preformed insulations, insulating cements, blankets and the like, with proper laboratory preparation of samples.
Performance in service is the ultimate measure of value for a thermal insulation, but simulative service tests give useful indications. One type involves applying for a specified period of time to a surface heated to a temperature approximately close to its intended service, and noting changes in the material and its properties during and after testing. The measurement of these changes is used to estimate what happens in service as a result of exposure to temperatures corresponding to those of the tests.
