ASTM C633 Standard Test for Adhesion or Cohesion Strength of Thermal Spray Coatings

EUROLAB, together with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ASTM C633 testing. This standard covers the determination of the degree of adhesion (bond strength) of a coating to a substrate, or the cohesive strength of a coating at tension normal to the surface.

ASTM C633 Standard Test for Adhesion or Cohesion Strength of Thermal Spray Coatings

The test consists of coating one face of a substrate fixture, affixing that coating to the face of a loading fixture, and subjecting this coating and the mounting of the fixtures to a tensile load normal to the plane of the coating.

It is specially adapted for testing thermal spray applied coatings including blasting processes for combustion flame, plasma arc, two-wire arc, high velocity oxygen fuel and spray feedstock which can be: wire, rod or powder.

Thermal spray coating materials include ceramics and metals such as metal oxides or carbides. In some cases, a coating is formed from different sputtering materials, such as an oxide layer sputtered onto a sputtered metal binder coat. The substrate is usually a metal, but can be an oxide or a ceramic such as graphite.

Usually this test method is performed at ambient temperature. Higher temperature testing is limited by the need for a suitable adhesive bonding agent. For some basic research it is recommended to use very low (cryogenic) temperature.

This test method is limited to testing thermal spray coatings that can be applied thicker than 0,015 inches (0,38 mm). The test was limited because an adhesive bonding agent was used. Binding agents that have been created so far for this method tend to penetrate thermal spray coatings and can invalidate results unless the coatings are thick enough to prevent penetration through the coating. Further development may determine that thin layers of certain types of particularly dense coatings can be satisfactorily tested. Alternatively, new adhesive bonding agents may be available that will allow the minimum thickness limitation to be reduced.

Values stated in inch-pound units should be considered standard. Values in parentheses are mathematical conversions to non-standard SI units, provided for informational purposes only.

This standard does not purport to address all safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
