This method is suitable for coatings where the elastic modulus of the substrate is significantly greater than the elastic modulus of the coating and the thickness of the substrate is significantly greater than the thickness of the coating.
Stresses in coatings arise as a result of their contraction or expansion when the expected movements are prevented by the adhesion of the coating to the substrate.
There are various reasons that lead to the development of stress in coatings: film formation (cross-linking, solvent evaporation, etc.); differences in thermal expansion coefficients between the coating and the substrate; moisture and water absorption; environmental effects (ultraviolet radiation, temperature and humidity) and others.
Knowledge of internal stresses in coatings is very important because these can affect coating performance and service life. If the internal stress exceeds the tensile strength of the film, cracks occur. If the stress exceeds the adhesion between the coating and the substrate, adhesion will decrease and may lead to separation of the coatings. Quantitative information on stresses in coatings can be useful in coating formulation and recommendations regarding their application and use.
This method has been found to be useful for air-drying industrial organic coatings, but its applicability has not yet been evaluated for thin coatings (thickness < 0,0254 mm (0,001 in)), powder, and thermally cured coatings.
