ASTM D790 Not Applicable and Standard Test Methods for Flexural Properties of Reinforced Plastics and Electrical Insulating Materials

The ASTM D790 standard is used to specify the flexural properties of unapplied and reinforced plastics, including high modulus composites and electrical insulating materials that use a three-point loading system to apply a load to a simply supported beam (sample).

The method is generally applicable to both rigid and semi-rigid materials, but for materials that do not break or yield on the outer surface of the test specimen, the flexural strength cannot be determined within the 5,0% strain limit.

Rectangular section test specimens are injection molded or cut from molded or extruded sheets or plates, or cut from molded or extruded shapes. Samples should be solid and properly rectangular. The sample rests on two supports and is loaded with a loading nose between the supports.

Measure the deviation in one of two ways; cross head position or using a yaw meter. Studies have shown that yaw data obtained with a baffle meter will differ from data obtained using the crosshead position. The deflection measurement method will be reported.

In production environments, quality control requirements are often met by measuring deviation using the crosshead position. However, more accurate measurement can be obtained by using a bias indicator such as a bias indicator.

Materials that do not tear with the maximum strain allowed under this test method may be more suitable for the 4-point twist test. The main difference between the two test methods is where the maximum bending moment and maximum axial fiber stresses are located. Maximum axial fiber stresses occur in a line below the loading nose in 3-point bending and over the area between the loading noses in 4-point bending. A four-point loading system method can be found in the D6272 Test Method.
