ASTM E1417 Standard for Liquid Penetrant Testing

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ASTM E1417 testing. This standard specifies minimum requirements for liquid penetrant testing of non-porous metal and non-metallic components.

ASTM E1417 Standard for Liquid Penetrant Testing

The penetrant inspection processes described in this application apply to in-process, final and maintenance (in-service) inspections. These processes are applicable to the detection of discontinuities such as lack of fusion, corrosion, cracks, thrusts, cold seals and porosity due to the surface of the exposed or inspected component.

Care should be taken when using high temperature components with components made of thermoplastic materials. Also, some cleaners, penetrants, and enhancers can have a detrimental effect on non-metallic materials such as plastic. Prior to inspection, tests should be performed to ensure that none of the cleaning or inspection materials are harmful to the components to be inspected.

Values stated in SI units or inch-pound units will be considered standard separately. The values specified in each system are not necessarily exact equivalents; therefore, to ensure compliance with the standard, each system should be used independently of the other and the values obtained from the two systems should not be combined.

All areas of this application may be open to agreement between the conscientious engineering organization and the supplier, or specific direction from the conscientious engineering organization.

Throughout this document, the term black light has been changed to UV-A to align with the latest nomenclature in Terminology E1316. Blacklight can mean a wide range of ultraviolet radiation; fluorescent penetrant inspection uses only the UV-A range.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
