Measured material flammability properties include ignition time ( t ign ), chemical ( Q ˙ chem ) and convective ( Q ˙ c ) heat release rates, mass loss rate ( m ˙ ), and effective heat of combustion (EHC).
FPA's distinguishing features include tungsten-quartz external, insulated heaters to provide the test specimen with a radiant flux of up to 110 kW/m2; this remains constant even as the surface shrinks or expands; Provisions for combustion or upward propagation of fire in prescribed flows of normal air, air enriched with up to 40% oxygen, deoxygenated air, pure nitrogen or mixtures of prior air and gaseous suppressants; and the ability to measure heat release rates and exhaust product flows during the upward propagation of fire on a vertical test specimen 0,305 m high.
FPA is used to evaluate the flammability of materials and products. It is also designed to obtain the transient response of such materials and products to prescribed heat fluxes in specified inert or oxidizing environments and to obtain laboratory measurements of production rates of fire products.
This standard is used to measure and describe the reaction of materials, products or assemblies to heat and flame under controlled conditions, but does not by itself cover all the factors necessary for a fire hazard or fire risk assessment. real fire conditions.
