ASTM C794 Standard Test Method for Peel Adhesion of Elastomeric Joint Sealants

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM C794 standard. The ASTM C794 standard specifies a laboratory procedure for determining the strength and peel properties of a single- or multi-component elastomeric joint sealant cured in situ for use in building construction.

ASTM C794 Standard Test Method for Peel Adhesion of Elastomeric Joint Sealants

There are differences of opinion among those interested in sealant technology as to whether this peel adhesion test simulates the type of stress and e-tensile stresses a sealant encounters in normal use. However, this test provides a valuable measure of the ability of cured sealant to provide a bond to the substrate under harsh peel conditions.

Many sealant manufacturers use the peel adhesion test to determine the adhesive properties of sealant/primer combinations with unusual or proprietary substrates. This test is particularly useful for quality measurements comparing batches of the same sealant by adhesion, or for examining the adhesion of a particular sealant to a variety of surfaces.

This test method alone is not suitable for comparing the overall performance of different sealants in a given application. The bond strength, which determines whether a particular sealant is useful in a particular application, also depends on the modulus of elasticity and the degree of stretching of the sealant. This test, as it stands, does not take into account the modulus of elasticity or the amount of stress that would be produced by a given strain in a real sealant in a movable joint. No known correlations are given for relating and applying module values to peel values.

This test requires that the results show whether the failure mode is primarily sticky or sticky. It is important to note that an adhesive degradation is not necessarily better than an adhesive defect if the adhesive value is sufficient for the application. Having the adhesive fault allows one to examine adhesion change over time and with various stress conditions.

Values stated in metric (SI) units will be accepted as standard. Values in parentheses are for informational purposes only. The committee that has jurisdiction over this standard is not aware of comparable standards published by other organizations.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.

Our organization, EUROLAB, provides standard test method services for the peeling adhesion of elastomeric joint sealants, within the framework of national and international standards, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies. Provides testing services within the scope of ASTM C794 standard.
