ASTM C881 Standard Specification for Epoxy-Resin-Based Adhesive Systems for Concrete

The ASTM C881 test covers two-component, epoxy-resin bonding systems for application to portland-cement concrete that can cure under humid conditions and bond to moist surfaces.

ASTM C881 Standard Specification for Epoxy-Resin-Based Adhesive Systems for Concrete

This specification covers two-component, epoxy-resin bonding systems for application to Portland-cement concrete that can cure under damp conditions and bond to damp surfaces. Epoxy-resin bonding systems are classified by type, quality, grade and colour. Adhesion systems can be classified as Type I, Type II, Type III, Type IV, Type V, Type VI and Type VII according to their physical requirements. Adhesive systems can be classified as Grade 1, Grade 2 and Grade 3 according to their flow properties and viscosities.

Also, in accordance with the temperature range for which they are suitable, these materials can be designated as Class A, Class B, Class C, Class D, Class E and Class. Epoxy resin systems are normally uneven but can be colored or darkened. These bonding systems will be laid in two components to be assembled immediately prior to use in accordance with formulated written instructions, component A, and will contain an epoxy resin with or without reactive diluent.

Component B will contain one or more curing agents that will cause the mix to harden when mixed with Component A. A suitable inert filler may be properly incorporated into one or both components. The filler must be non-seizable or easily dispersible in any component in which it is included.

All systems must be cured under moist conditions and will bond to moist surfaces. Different test methods should be performed to determine the following properties: consistency, gel time, filler content, epoxy equivalent, viscosity, absorption, bond strength, thermal compatibility, heat deflection temperature, linear coefficient of shrinkage, compressive yield strength and modulus, tensile strength and elongation at fracture, and contact strength.

This specification does not cover epoxy-resin-based bonding systems modified by the addition of ingredients such as cement, fine aggregate or fiber reinforcement. Additional testing may be required to meet current specifications for these applications.

This specification does not address the effects of creep under load or the potential for creep tearing on epoxy-resin-based bonding systems. Additional testing is required for applications where creep and creep ruptures are critical.

Values stated in units-SI units or inch-pound units should be considered separately as standard. The values specified in each system are not necessarily exactly equivalent; therefore, each system will be used independently of the other to ensure compliance with the standard and values from the two systems will not be combined.

This standard is not meant to address all safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to determine appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.

Our organization also provides testing services to businesses within the scope of ASTM C881 Standard Specification for Epoxy-Resin Based Adhesion Systems for Concrete, within the framework of laboratory testing services.
