ASTM D-1640 Standard Test Methods for Drying, Curing, or Film Formation of Organic Coatings

This standard covers the determination of the various stages and rates of film formation during drying or curing of organic coatings under laboratory controlled air temperature or humidity conditions. Procedures for evaluating drying under prevailing temperature and humidity conditions in the store and in the field are also described.

These test methods can be used to determine the various stages and rates of drying, drying, and film formation of organic coatings for comparison of coating types, evaluating the effect of composition changes on drying time, or evaluating in-shop dry-cure time.

Low temperature can significantly slow the drying rate of coatings, so low temperature curing agents, catalysts or accelerators can often be used to aid drying and film formation at lower temperatures.
