ASTM D1002 Standard Test Method for Apparent Shear Strength at Tensile Load (Metal to Metal) of Metal Specimens Bonded with Single Lap Joint Adhesive

The ASTM D1002 standard is one of the most common test methods used to determine the bond strength of adhesives when tested on a single lap joint specimen on a metal-to-metal bonded test panel. Similar test methods are ASTM D3163 (Rigid Plastics) and ASTM D3164 (Plastic and Metal Surfaces). Each test method uses a sample that is interconnected via a single lap shear joint.

The standard specifies the following parameters to ensure accurate and consistent testing;

• Unless otherwise agreed by the manufacturer and purchaser, the manufacturer of the adhesive will specify the conditions under which the sample is prepared.
• The manufacturer is required to provide certain information regarding:
• Surface preparation procedure
• Mixing instructions for the adhesive used to bond the samples
• Detailed adhesive application procedures (Thickness, number of coats, spread rate)
• Detailed test specimen mounting conditions (Temperature, humidity, etc.)
• Curing conditions (applied pressure, pressure application method, etc.)
