ASTM D1003 Haze and Light Transmittance Test of Transparent Plastics

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ASTM D1003 testing. Haze is the scattering of light as it passes through a transparent material, resulting in poor vision or glare.

ASTM D1003 Haze and Light Transmittance Test of Transparent Plastics

Turbidity can be material-specific, a result of the molding process, or a result of surface texture. Fog can also be the result of environmental factors such as weather conditions or surface wear. Light Transmittance measures the amount of light passing through a sample. Therefore, turbidity and transmission measurements can be useful in product development, process development, and end-use performance testing.

By using the HAZE meter Spectrophotometer and Shimadzu UV devices, we get an extremely accurate result. After the illuminator, observer angle, and reference color are determined, the test sample is placed in the sample holder and the spectrophotometer takes a reading. We take three readings for each test and average the results.

Light scattered as it passes through a film or sheet of material can create a hazy or smoky area when objects are viewed through the material. Another effect could be shroud glare that occurs on a car's windshield when driving into the sun. Although haze measurements are most commonly made using a haze meter, a spectrophotometer can be used provided it meets the geometric and spectral requirements of the standard. The use of a spectrophotometer for turbidity measurement of plastics can provide valuable diagnostic data about the source of turbidity.

Procedure A (pusmeter) test values are normally slightly higher and less variable than Procedure B (spectrophotometer) test values.

Uniform light transmission is achieved by placing a clean sample at a certain distance from the inlet port of the integrated sphere. However, when the sample is hazy, the total hemispherical light transmittance should be measured by placing the sample in the inlet port of the sphere. The total hemispherical light transmittance measured will be greater than the normal light transmittance, depending on the optical properties of the sample. With this test method, the sample is always placed at the entrance port of the sphere to measure haze and total hemispherical light transmittance.

Turbidity data representative of the material can be obtained by avoiding heterogeneous surface or internal defects that are not characteristic of the material.

Haze and light transmittance data are particularly useful for quality control and specification purposes.

Before proceeding with this test method, consideration is given to the properties of the material being tested. Any test specimen preparation, conditioning, dimensions or test parameters or combinations covered in the material specification shall take precedence over those specified in this test method. If there are no material properties, the default conditions apply. This test method is not equivalent to ISO 13468-1 and ISO/DIS 14782.

This test method essentially involves evaluating certain light transmitting and wide-angle light scattering properties of planar sections of materials such as clear plastic. Two procedures are provided for light transmittance and haze measurement. Procedure A uses a haze meter as described in Section 5 and Procedure B uses a spectrophotometer as described in Section 8. Material with a turbidity value greater than 30% is considered diffuse and should be tested in accordance with Application ASTM E2387.
