This standard covers the measurement of the tear strength of nonwoven fabrics by the tongue (single tear) procedure using a record constant elongation rate (CRE) tensile testing machine.
The CRE type tensile tester has become the tester of choice for determining the tear strength of the tongue. It is recognized that some constant velocity of motion (CRT) tensile testing machines continue to be used. As a result, these testers can be used upon agreement between the buyer and the supplier.
This test method is applicable to most nonwoven fabrics, including treated or untreated, including those that are heavily sized, coated or resin-treated, provided that the fabric does not tear in the direction of the applied force during testing. This test method may not be useful for high loft nonwovens. If the tear is not substantially longitudinal, the fabric should be defined by this test as tear-proof in that direction.
The tongue tear strength measured in this method is the maximum single peak force required to sustain or propagate a previously initiated tear in the specimen. The declared value includes the simultaneous force required to slide the fibers, break the fibers, break the fiber bonds and break the fiber locks in the nonwoven fabric. The value reported is not directly related to the force required to initiate or initiate the tear.
