ASTM D7158 Standard Test Method for Wind Resistance of Asphalt Shingles

This test method covers the procedure for calculating the wind resistance of asphalt shingles when applied according to the manufacturer's instructions and sealed under certain conditions.

Shingle designs based on wind interlocking or product rigidity cannot be evaluated using this test method. The method calculates the lifting force applied to the shingle by the effect of the wind at a given speed and compares it with the mechanical lifting resistance of the shingle. A shingle is determined to be wind resistant at a given base wind speed when the measured lift resistance exceeds the calculated lift for that speed (3 second gust, ASCE 7).
