ASTM D1004 Standard Test Method for Initial Tear Resistance of Plastic Film and Coating

The ASTM D1004 test covers the determination of the tear resistance of flexible plastic film and coating at very low loading rates, 51 mm [2 in.] /min. This test method is designed to measure the tear initiation force. The sample geometry of this test method produces a stress concentration in a small area of the sample. The maximum stress, usually near the onset of tearing, is recorded as tear resistance in newtons (or pounds of force).

Tear resistance measures the ultimate force required to tear the film or sheet. It is often used for quality control checks or material comparison where tearing defects are possible.

The average thickness of the sample is measured. The sample is then placed in the grips of the testing machine and applied 2 times per minute until it ruptures. The sample is cut from a sheet cut into the appropriate shape. The shape of the specimen is designed to produce a tear when the specimen is pulled in tension. Die C samples are commonly used.

Values stated in SI units should be accepted as standard. Values in parentheses are for information only.

This standard does not require to address all security concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to determine appropriate safety and health practices prior to use and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions. Special warning statements are given in Note 2.
