The ASTM D1044 standard, published by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), describes a procedure for estimating the resistance of clear plastics to some form of surface wear by measuring the change in optical properties.

Abrasive damage is measured by calculating the percent turbidity difference according to the numerical Test Method. Values ​​stated in SI units should be accepted as standard. Values ​​in parentheses are for informational purposes only.

This test method is equivalent in measuring the wear resistance of ISO 3537, Part 8 and ISO 15082, Part 11, but not equivalent in any other measurement or division. This test method is not equivalent to ISO 9352 and results cannot be directly compared between the two methods.

Previous attempts to use the Taber Abrasive for volume loss determinations of various plastics 2 have been unsuccessful due to the excessively large coefficients of variation attributed to the data. Insufficient agreement among participating laboratories made it inadvisable to use the volume loss procedure as an ASTM test method.
