ASTM D1056 Standard Specification for Flexible Cellular Materials - Sponge or Expanded Rubber

The ASTM D1056 test covers flexible cellular rubber products known as sponge rubber and expanded rubber, but does not apply to latex foam rubber or ebonite cellular rubber. The base material for an open/closed cellular product may be made of synthetic, natural, or reclaimed rubber or a blend, and may contain other polymers or chemicals, or both, which can be modified by organic or inorganic additives.

ASTM D1056 Standard Specification for Flexible Cellular Materials - Sponge or Expanded Rubber

Cellular rubber will be classified by types, classes, suffixes and grades: Types 1 and 2; Classes A, B, C and D; Grades 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. The various grades of cellular rubber will comply with the requirements for specified physical properties. The following test methods will be applied: accelerated weathering tests; compression-deflection tests; oil immersion test (open-cell sponge); liquid immersion tests (closed cell); water absorption test; density tests; and low temperature flex test.

These elastomeric materials have properties similar to vulcanized rubber, namely the ability to (1) be converted from a thermoplastic to a thermoset state by crosslinking (vulcanization), or (2) significantly recover their original shape when stretched or stretched, or both.

Extruded or molded shapes that are too small to cut standard test specimens are difficult to classify or test with these methods and often require special testing procedures.

In case of conflict between the provisions of this general specification and the provisions of the detailed specifications or test methods for a particular product, the latter shall take precedence. References to test methods in this specification should specify the test or tests specifically requested.

Values stated in inch-pound units should be considered standard. Values in parentheses are mathematical conversions to non-standard SI units, provided for informational purposes only.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
