This test method involves measuring the apparent viscosity of lubricating greases at equilibria over the temperature range of −54°C to 38°C (−65°F to 100°F). Measurements are limited to the range of 0,1 P to 1 P at 25 s −100000 and 15000 P to 1 P at 1 s −100.
At very low temperatures, the cutting speed range may decrease due to the greater force required to push the grease through smaller capillaries.
Temperature measuring instruments such as liquid-in-glass thermometers, thermocouples, thermistors, platinum resistance thermometers providing equivalent or better accuracy and precision will be used, covering the temperature range for the ASTM thermometer 49°C.
This standard uses SI (acceptable metric) units as well as inch-pound units. The first specified values should be accepted as the standard.
