ASTM D1171 Standard Test Method for Rubber Deterioration - Surface Ozone Cracking Outdoor

The ASTM D1171 test allows estimation of the relative ability of rubber compounds used for applications requiring resistance to outdoor weathering. This test method is not applicable to materials normally classified as hard rubber, but can be adapted to molded or extruded soft rubber materials and sponge rubber for use in window weathersealing and similar automotive applications.

ASTM D1171 Standard Test Method for Rubber Deterioration - Surface Ozone Cracking Outdoor

With ozone attack, cracks can occur in many different elastomers and the characteristic attack of vulnerable rubbers is known as ozone cracking. The problem was very common before, especially with tires, but now it is rarely seen on these products due to preventive measures.

However, ozone attack is also seen in many other safety-critical items such as fuel lines and rubber seals. Only traces of gas are required to initiate cracking and therefore these substances can also succumb to the problem.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.

Our organization also provides testing services to businesses within the scope of ASTM D1171 Standard Test Method for Surface Ozone Cracking Outdoor - Rubber Deterioration within the framework of laboratory testing services.
