The ASTM D1177 test covers the determination of the freezing point of an aqueous engine coolant solution in the laboratory. These products may also be marketed in a ready-to-use form (pre-diluted).
In the case of testing solutions at certain concentrations, they will be prepared from representative samples as specified in application D1176. The secondary stages separated in dilution need not be separated.
The freezing point of the engine coolant indicates the coolant freeze protection. The freezing point of an engine coolant can be used to determine the approximate glycol content, provided the glycol type is known.
