ASTM D1210 Standard Test Method for Fineness of Dispersion of Pigment Vehicle Systems with Hegman Type Gage

This standard covers the measurement of the degree of dispersion of pigment (commonly referred to as "mill fineness") in a pigment vehicle system, such as liquid coatings and their intermediates. It can also be used to evaluate the inclusion of particles by cleanliness (or texture) grading.

In making pigmented products, the pigment is usually dispersed into a part of the vehicle in some kind of mill. At this stage, it is necessary to be able to decide whether the pigment agglomerates have been sufficiently fragmented so as not to interfere with the smoothness of the finished coating film. This standard describes one way of making this decision.

Standard Test Method

The product is spread by means of a scraper in a machined conical path. At some point in this path, particles or agglomerates or both will become visible. A direct reading from the graduated scale is made at the point where the particles form a particular pattern. It is also possible to evaluate “cleanliness” when using the single-track indicator. This standard is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D01 on Paints and Related Coatings, Materials and Applications and is the direct responsibility of subcommittee D01.24 on the physical properties of liquid paints and paint materials.
