ASTM D1331 standard, These test methods cover the determination of the surface tension and interfacial tension of a substance. It applies to a variety of liquid materials, including but not limited to solutions of dyes, solvents, and surfactants as defined in Terminology D459.
The following four methods are discussed:
Method A - Surface Tension with du Noü Ring;
Method A was originally written to cover aqueous solutions of surfactants, but it also applies to aqueous paints, non-aqueous solutions (including paints), and mixed solvent solutions.
Method B - Interface Tension with respect to du Noüy Ring;
Method B can be applied to two-phase solutions. More than one soluble component may be present, including soluble components that are not surface-active in themselves.
Method C - Surface Tension with Wilhelmy Plate;
Method C is applicable to surfactant liquids and unlike the du Noüy ring, buoyancy correction is not required and the results are not affected by the medium viscosities of the liquid (1-10 Pa-sec). It is the recommended method for use with paints and resin solutions.
Method D - Interfacial Tension with Wilhelmy Plate;
Method D is applicable to two-phase solutions and mixtures.
