ASTM D1423 Standard Test Method for Twist in Yarns by Direct Count

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM D1423 standard. The ASTM D1423 standard covers the determination of the amount and direction of twist at the end of any stage of twist in single (twisted or filamentary), plied, cabled or new (except long-term repeat patterns) yarns.

ASTM D1423 Standard Test Method for Twist in Yarns by Direct Count

The procedures are primarily designed for yarns in packages, but can also be applied to yarns from fabrics with special precautions. The spun yarn procedure can also be applied to rovings.

For ply yarns, this test method involves determining the twist of the ply yarns and the twist of the single yarn before folding. For cabled yarns, the test method covers the determination of cable or hawser twist; twisting the folded yarn after folding, but before the final twist; and twisting the single yarn before folding. Also included are procedures for determining the twists of single and plied yarn components as they take place in the final structure. Also included are instructions for determining twist in plied yarn made with direct cabling technology.

This test method is not designed for yarns that elongate more than 2.5% when tension is increased from 7.5 to 0.25 mN/tex [0.75 to 5.0 gf/tex]. Following the procedures of this test method for such yarns will be independent of the bias and sensitivity determined for this test method. The report from such tests should include the voltage used for this test.

For a faster but less accurate method of determining twist in single-spun yarns, refer to Test Method D1422. This test method has been evaluated for use in determining twist in rotor yarns and is not recommended.

Values stated in SI units or inch-pound units will be considered standard separately. The values specified in each system may not be exactly equivalent; therefore, each system should be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-compliance with the standard.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
