ASTM D1424 Standard Test Method for Tear Strength of Fabrics with a Falling Pendulum (Elmendorf-Type) Apparatus

The ASTM D1424 standard covers determining the force required to propagate a single tear tear, starting with a cut in a fabric and using a falling pendulum (Elmendorf-Type) device.

This test method is applicable to most fabrics, including woven, layered blankets, pile pile, blanket and airbag fabrics, provided that the fabric does not tear in the direction of force application during testing.

The fabrics may be untreated, substantially sized, coated, resin-treated or otherwise processed. Instructions are provided for testing samples with or without soaking.
