Test specimen geometries, test specimen manufacturing methods, test modes (i.e. force or displacement control), test rates (i.e. force or displacement ratio), data collection and reporting procedures are covered.
This test method is used to measure the shear strength of ceramic joints in test specimens extracted from larger joined parts by machining. Test specimens produced in this way are not expected to bend due to relaxation of residual stresses, but are expected to be much flatter and more uniform in dimensionality than butt-jointed test specimens prepared by joining two halves, which is not recommended.
In addition, this test method is designed for joints with low or medium strength relative to the backing material to be joined. High-strength joints should not be tested with this test method due to the high probability of invalid tests due to fractures initiated at reaction points rather than joints.
