ASTM C40 Standard Test Method for Organic Impurities in Fine Aggregates for Concrete

This test method is used for the preliminary determination of the acceptability of fine aggregates according to the requirements of Specification C33 regarding organic impurities.

The primary value of this testing method is to provide a warning that harmful amounts of organic impurities may be present. When a sample subjected to this test produces a darker color than the standard colour, it is recommended that testing for the effect of organic impurities on the strength of the mortar be carried out in accordance with Test Method C87.
