ASTM D1921 Standard Test Methods for Particle Size (Sieve Analysis) of Plastic Materials

Because these test methods use dry sieving, the lower limit of measurement is considered to be approximately 38 µm (No. 400 mesh). For smaller particle sizes, sedimentation test methods are recommended.

Two test methods are described:

• Test Method A: This test method uses multiple sieves selected to exceed the particle size of the material. This method is used to determine the mean particle diameter and particle size distribution.
• Test Method B: This test method is the abbreviation of Test Method A, which is run with several special sieves. This test method determines the "percentage of pass" or "percentage of retention" on a given sieve. Test Method B is applicable to materials that do not have a normal particle size distribution, such as pellets and cubes.

Values ​​specified in SI units shall be accepted as the standard for the dimensions of the wire mesh openings and the diameters of the wires used in the wire mesh.
