ASTM E1251 Standard Test Method for Analysis of Aluminum and Aluminum Alloys by Spark Atomic Emission Spectrometer

This test method describes the analysis of aluminum and its alloys by spark-atomic emission spectrometry (Spark-AES). The aluminum sample to be analyzed may be a cold cast disc, cast, foil, sheet, plate, extrusion, or other machined form or shape. The elements covered by this method are listed in the table below.

This test method is primarily suitable for the analysis of cold cast discs as described in Applications E716. Other forms can be analyzed with the following conditions:

• They must be large enough to prevent overheating;
• Allow machining to provide a clean, flat surface that creates a seal between the sample and the spark stand;
• Reference materials with a similar metallurgical state and chemical composition are available.
