ASTM F2054 Standard Test Method for Burst Testing of Flexplate Gaskets Bounding Plates Using Internal Air Pressure

The seal is around a flexible package that is internally pressurized and sealed. This burst test will increase the pressure of the package until the seal bursts.

Retaining plates help stabilize the product and distribute pressure evenly. Proper pressure distribution will help identify the weakest point in the gasket. This procedure applies to flexible packages (bags) with seals around them. It also applies to bags with a peel-off seal.

Packages are tested in an apparatus that applies internal pressure until the seal breaks (explodes). The package is placed between the two holding plates, between the holding plates, which adds strength to the package. This prevents the package from expanding but leaves the seal edge free. An internal sensor will monitor the increased pressure during the test.

Two configurations are available for this test method, depending on the application:

• Open package configuration, the seal is placed on three sides of the package and the fourth side is left open;
• Closed pack configuration, the seal is placed on all four sides of the pack.

This test showed sealing failure trends when the package was subjected to different pressures. Pressure differences are common in the field during sterilization and shipping. It is important to note that the purpose of this test is the burst strength of the gasket. The test cannot determine the overall strength of the pack or the regions of the pack that come into contact with the limiter plates. The test can be used to evaluate sealing strength at production and various distribution points.
