When an oil is refined, there is a relationship between the color of the distillate and the degree of refining. During the refining process, crude oil is converted into an assortment of different colors, from the deep red-black of the crude oil to the pale yellow hue of the lighter fractions.
Different petroleum colors can be accurately measured and refining controlled using the ASTM D1500 color scale.
The ASTM D1500 color scale is also used for product and interface detection and product contamination monitoring.
