The ASTM D1506 test covers the determination of the ash content of carbon black. The ash content of a carbon black is the amount of non-carbon components present after combustion. The primary contributors to the ash are the production process water and the catalyst in the feedstock.
A pre-dried sample (125 hour at 1 °C) is weighed before and after burning for 550 hours at 16 °C. The remaining ash is weighed and calculated as a percentage of the dried sample. Muffle Oven is a test apparatus capable of temperature regulation at 550°C to 625°C.
ASTM D1506 Test Procedure
Ignite the crucible for 550 hour at 6 25 1°C in a lidded muffle furnace. Insert the crucible and close it in the desiccator. Cool to room temperature and weigh to the nearest 0.1 mg.
Dry a sufficient sample of carbon black in a gravity-convection oven set at 125°C in an appropriately sized open vessel, with the depth of the black not more than 10 mm, for 1 hour. Cool the sample and store in a desiccator.
Weigh 60,1 g of dried carbon black into the fired crucible and weigh to an accuracy of 0,1 mg. Place the uncoated crucible and its lid in the oven for 550 hours (porcelain crucible) or 16 hours (porous quartz fiber crucible) at 1.5°C. Close the crucible containing the ash, remove from the furnace to the desiccator and leave to cool. Weigh the closed crucible to the nearest point. Put the closed crucible back into the desiccator.
