ASTM D1509 Standard Test Methods for Carbon Black - Loss of Heating

The ASTM D1509 test covers the determination of the heating loss of carbon black at 125 °C. This heating loss consists primarily of moisture, but other volatile substances may also be lost. These test methods are not applicable to processed carbon blacks containing additional volatile materials if moisture loss is to be measured.

These test methods can also be used to determine the heating loss of carbon fillers (rCF/rCB) recovered at 125°C. However, these materials are not included in precision studies and therefore the precision statements in this standard may not apply to these materials.

In addition to determining the heat loss (primarily moisture content) of carbon black, these drying conditions are used to prepare samples before performing other carbon black tests.

When preparing larger samples for other tests, use an appropriately sized open container so that the depth of black is not more than 10 mm during conditioning. Carbon black is hygroscopic. The amount of moisture absorbed is related to the surface area and relative humidity of the black, ambient temperature and the time the material is exposed.
