ASTM D1514 Carbon Black - Standard Test Method for Screen Residue

The ASTM D1514 test covers the determination of water wash screen residue in normal untreated carbon blacks. May not apply to oil-treated carbon blacks as the oil will prevent the black from being properly wetted with water.

ASTM D1514 Carbon Black - Standard Test Method for Screen Residue

A sample of carbon black is washed with water through a wire mesh sieve of a certain size until all that remains is a non-carbon black residue. This residue is dried, weighed and the amount of residue is expressed as mg/kg (ppm) of the original sample.

The amount of sieve residue of carbon black is important for some molded or extruded products as it may be related to the surface appearance of these products. The maximum residue in each application is normally determined and agreed between the user and the manufacturer.

ASTM D1514 Test Procedure

Before testing, the strainer is cleaned by opening valves A and B and closing valve C. The strainer is allowed to wash for 2 minutes. Valve B is closed and valve C is opened. Valves A and C must be fully open. The water pressure is measured with a reducing valve. Recommended water pressure may be 207 6 34 kPa (30 6 5 lbf/in.2 ). After the water pressure has been adjusted, the hopper is placed with a 50 mm (2 inch) diameter sieve through the sieve holder and the water is allowed to flow for 3 minutes. The flow is ensured by closing the A and C valves. If no particle is observed, the device is ready for use. Weigh 100.0 g of carbon black on a balance. A suitable strainer is attached to the funnel and the A and C valves are opened to start the water flow. Carbon black is slowly added to the funnel. A gentle stream of water is used from the hose connected to the device. Washing is continued until the washing water comes. The sieve holder and strainer are removed from the funnel and the residue is gently rubbed with a finger to remove any hard particles, and any carbon black lumps that may not be completely wet are re-wetted by the water. The sieve holder and strainer are removed and left to dry for 1 hour.
