ASTM D1518 Standard Test Method for Thermal Resistance of Impact Systems Using Hot Plates

The ASTM D1518 standard covers the measurement of thermal resistance at steady state conditions, batting and batting/fabric systems and other materials within specified limits. It measures the heat transfer from a layer of the test material from a horizontal flat plate to a cool atmosphere at a hot, dry, constant temperature, and calculates the resistance of the material.

Measurements are made in still air conditions or with a horizontal flow of air above the sample. For practical purposes, this test method is limited to determinations on impact samples and layered batting / fabric assemblies with an internal thermal resistance of 0,1 to 1,5 K·m2/W and thicknesses not exceeding 50 mm.

The coefficients obtained are strictly valid only for the specific samples tested and the specified thermal and environmental conditions of each test. This test method gives the air gap to measure the temperature difference between the hot plate and the cold air, and the cold air temperature, with the specified air velocity, the values ​​valid for comparison under the same test conditions.
