ASTM D1544 Standard Test Method for Color of Transparent Liquids (Gardner Color Scale)

This test method is applicable to drying oils, varnishes, fatty acids, polymerized fatty acids and resin solutions. Application to other materials has not been tested.

A glass tube is filled with the material being tested. If the material is noticeably cloudy, it must first be filtered. It is compared to glass standards by determining which standard matches the sample closest in brightness and saturation. Tonal differences can be ignored.

The sample is poured into a 10,65 mm diameter test tube and placed in the sample hole in the comparator. Two discs containing the color standards are rotated by rotating the control knobs on the front of the comparator until, for example, its color falls between two standards with 1 Gardner Color unit separate, or exactly matches one of the standards.
