ASTM D1578 Test for Tensile Strength of Yarn in Hank Form

The observed tensile strength is expressed in units of force and equations are provided to convert tensile strength to skein breaking strength and skein rupture factor.

For determination of yarn breaking strength and elongation by the single yarn method, refer to Test Method D2256 .

This test method is applicable to single or ply spun yarns consisting of any fiber or fiber blend, but is not suitable for yarns that stretch more than 2.5% when the tension is increased from 7.5 to 0.03 mN/tex or 5. Up to 0.08 gf/denier.

This test method offers three options depending on the spool circumference, the number of turns in the skein, and the machine speed or break time.

This test method is often combined with linear density determination performed on the same skeins. Special measures are noted for wrapping such skeins.

Where appropriate, this test method specifies all requirements in SI units. Conventional units are pounds per inch and are exact values.
