Increasing demand has led to the need for more stringent acceptance criteria regarding the mechanical and chemical properties of plastic materials. Because of some new structural uses of these materials, it is important to know how they will behave when subjected to dynamic conditions, i.e. impacts.
Dynamic failures of materials differ from those found when tested at slower, more constant speeds. This is especially true for plastics, where many variables can affect the material. The way in which polymers are used to make a particular material form-in-material; whether the resins used are filled or unfilled; color additives; and forming processes all affect the strength and durability of the end product, not just the end material.
These tests should be performed under a standard laboratory atmosphere of 23 (± 2) degrees Celsius and 50% relative humidity. By varying the conditioning and test temperature and testing in a controlled manner at any given impact rate, the temperature at which the material enters a ductile failure mode can be determined for most plastics.
This test configuration is well suited for determining the performance properties of plastic materials under impact conditions. Both plastics suppliers and their customers can use test results to validate product performance. The use of environmental chamber allows both parties to understand how the material can perform in colder or hotter applications.
