ASTM D4543 Standard Test for Preparation of Rock Core as Cylindrical Test Specimens

These practices specify procedures for preparing rock core rock test specimens from field-obtained core or block specimens for strength and deformation testing, and to determine that test specimen dimensions conform to the tolerances established by this practice. Cubic, rectangular or other shapes are not within the scope of this application.

Rock is a complex engineering material that can vary greatly as a function of lithology, stress history, weathering, moisture content, and chemistry and other natural geological processes. Therefore, it is not always possible to obtain or prepare core samples that meet the desired tolerances given in this application. Most commonly, this is manifested by weaker, more porous, and weakly cemented rock types and rock types that contain significant or weak (or both) structural features. For rock types that are difficult to prepare, every reasonable effort should be made to prepare a sample in accordance with this practice and the intended testing procedure.

This application also provides for tolerance checks regarding the length-to-diameter ratio, the flatness of the elements on the cylindrical surface, the flatness of the end bearing surfaces, and the perpendicularity of the end surfaces to the core axis.

The practices used in this standard to specify how data is collected/recorded and calculated are considered industry standard. In addition, they often represent important digits that need to be hidden. The procedures used do not take into account material variation, the purpose for which the data was obtained, special-purpose studies or any other considerations for the user's purposes; and it is common practice to increase or decrease the significant digits of the reported data commensurate with these considerations. It is beyond the scope of this standard to consider important steps used in analysis methods for engineering design.
