This test method is designed for routine analysis of cold cast discs or inspection testing of stainless steel specimens with a flat surface of at least 13 mm (0,5 inch) in diameter. The samples should be large enough to prevent overheating during discharge and have a similar metallurgical condition and composition as the reference materials.

One or more of the reference materials should be very close to the composition of the sample. The technique of analyzing reference materials with unknowns and performing specified mathematical corrections can also be used to correct for interference effects and compensate for errors due to instrument deviation.

A variety of such systems are widely used. Any of these that will achieve analytical accuracy equivalent to that reported for this test method is acceptable.
