The ASTM D1653 standard covers the determination of the rate at which water vapor passes through paint, varnish, lacquer and other organic coating films. The films may be free films or may be applied to porous substrates.
A similar, but more generally applicable, test method is specified, which should be considered in the case of other materials. Test Methods D1653 covers two test methods as follows:
Concordance should not be expected between results obtained with different methods or test conditions. The method closest to the conditions of use should be chosen.
There are instruments on the market that aim to measure the water vapor transmission of films more easily and quickly than the methods described in Test Methods D1653 and E96. They essentially run the same kinds of tests as ASTM methods, but they do it instrumentally. However, it appears that no side-by-side tests have been conducted comparing the results from measurements with such devices with these ASTM methods for precision and accuracy.
