ASTM D1654 Test Method for Painted or Coated Specimens

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM D1654 standard. ASTM D1654 is a standard corrosion test method that evaluates the resistance of painted or coated specimens after exposure to different corrosive environments.

ASTM D1654 Test Method for Painted or Coated Specimens

ASTM D1654 uses corrosion leakage perpendicular to the drawn line as a quantitative measure of corrosion performance. The less corrosion creep on both sides of the bar, the higher the corrosion resistance performance.

ASTM D1654 describes the use of one of a number of methods to remove the coating along the line of undercut by corrosion so that the full width of the corrosion creep width can be measured with a scale or caliper.

Coating removal methods specified by ASTM D1654 include: scraping with a spatula, picking with a knife, chemical stripping of coating, air blasting, or vigorous washing.

ASTM D1654 provides the assessment of unscratched areas with reference to ASTM D714 for the similar numerical assessment of the blistering of the painted surface and to ASTM D610 for the numerical assessment of the rust coverage of the painted surface.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
