ASTM D1709 Standard Test Methods for Impact Strength of Plastic Film by the Free Falling Dart Method

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM D1709 standard. This test method involves determining the energy that causes the plastic film to break under certain impact conditions.

ASTM D1709 Standard Test Methods for Impact Strength of Plastic Film by the Free Falling Dart Method

This energy is expressed in terms of the weight (mass) of the missile falling from a certain height, which will result in 50% failure in the tested samples.

Two test methods are described:

Test Method A: Uses a 0.66 6 0.01 mm (26.0 6 0.4 inch) diameter hemispherical head dart dropped from a height of 38.10 6 0.13 m (1.500 6 0.005 inches). This test method can be used for films whose impact resistance requires a mass of about 50 g or less to about 6 kg to break.

Test Method B: 1.52 6 Uses a 0.03 60.0 0.25 mm (1.70 50.80 6 inch) diameter hemispherical head dart thrown from a height of 0.13 2.000 6 m (0.005 + 0.3, -6 inches). The applicability range is from about XNUMX kg to about XNUMX kg.

Two test techniques are described:

The standard technique is the ladder method. With this technique, the missile weight used during testing is reduced or increased in smooth increments after testing each sample, depending on the observed outcome (fail or fail) for the sample.

The alternative technique allows samples to be repeatedly tested in batches of ten. A missile weight is used for each group and the missile weight is changed from group to group in equal increments.

The ladder technique and the alternative technique give equivalent results in terms of both the impact fracture weight values obtained and the precision with which they are determined.

Values stated in SI units should be accepted as standard. Values in parentheses are for informational purposes only.

This standard does not purport to address, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices prior to use and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions.
