ASTM D1777 Standard Test Method for Thickness of Textile Materials

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM D1777 standard. The ASTM D1777 standard covers the measurement of the thickness of most textile materials. It applies to most fabrics, including woven fabrics, air cushion fabrics, blankets, pile fabrics, knit fabrics, layered fabrics and pile fabrics.

ASTM D1777 Standard Test Method for Thickness of Textile Materials

The fabrics may be untreated, substantially sized, coated, resin-treated or otherwise processed. Instructions are provided for thickness testing, except as provided in another standard, such as those listed in Chapter 2.

The ASTM D1777 standard does not claim to address all if there are safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of enterprises using this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices before use and to determine the applicability of restrictions in legal regulations.

When performing this test method, a sample is placed on the base of a caliper and a weighted presser foot is lowered onto the sample. The displacement between the sole and the presser foot is measured as the thickness of the sample.

Thickness is one of the basic physical properties of textile materials. In some industrial applications, thickness requires strict controls within certain limits. The mass and temperature properties of textile materials are usually estimated from the thickness values and are useful in measuring some performance properties such as thickness, wear and shrinkage before and after.

The thickness value of many textile materials varies considerably depending on the pressure applied to the sample when measuring the thickness. In any case, the apparent thickness varies inversely with the applied pressure. Therefore, it is important to specify the pressure when determining any thickness value.

Unless there is a test method for thickness measurement for the textile product to be tested, or unless otherwise specified in the textile product specification or contract terms, the full test method described in the ASTM D1777 standard should be used.

Values stated in SI units should be accepted as standard. Values in inches-pounds may be approximate.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
