ASTM D185 Standard Test Method for Coarse Particles in Pigments

This standard covers the quantification of coarse particles in dry pigments and coarse particles and crusts in mixtures of pigments and vehicles.

The smoothness of the paint film is very important in paint production. Agglomerates or coarse particles larger than 45 µm are difficult to disperse and may prevent a smooth film. This standard is a valuable quality control test for the classification of raw materials.

The 45 µm sieve should be kept as a reference standard in the laboratory for comparison purposes. Whenever a new sieve is secured, a practical test of its accuracy should be made by performing a comparison test using a pigment containing a significant amount of coarse particles on it and on the reference standard sieve. For this purpose, a reserve stock of such a pigment should be kept.
