EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM D189 standard. This test method covers the determination of the amount of carbon residue remaining after evaporation and pyrolysis of an oil and aims to provide some indication of relative coking tendencies.
This test method is generally applicable to relatively non-volatile petroleum products that partially decompose when distilled at atmospheric pressure. Petroleum products containing ash-forming components as determined by Test Method D482 or IP method 4 will have a false high carbon residue based on the amount of ash formed.
The term carbon residue is used throughout this test method to denote the carbonaceous residue formed after the evaporation and pyrolysis of a petroleum product under the conditions specified in this test method.
While the carbon residue value of motor oil was once considered an indication of the amount of carbonaceous deposits a motor oil would form in an engine's combustion chamber, it is now considered to be of dubious importance due to the presence of additives in many oils. For example, an ash-forming detergent additive can increase an oil's carbon residual value, but generally reduces its tendency to form deposits.
Values stated in SI units should be accepted as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.
