ASTM D1894 Standard Test Method for Coefficients of Static and Kinetic Friction of Plastic Film and Coating

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM D1894 standard. The ASTM D1894 standard covers the determination of the starting and sliding friction coefficients when the plastic film and sheet slides on itself or other materials under specified test conditions.

The procedure allows the use of a fixed sled with a movable plane or a movable sled with a fixed plane. Both procedures give the same coefficients of friction values for a given sample.

For the friction properties of plastic films partially wrapped around a roller or capstan, refer to Test Method G02.50 under the jurisdiction of ASTM Subcommittee G143.

The test data obtained with this test method are relevant and suitable for use in engineering design. As an alternative to this test, the friction coefficient can be run at temperatures other than 23°C by simply heating the plane while the slide is at ambient temperature. Values stated in SI units should be accepted as standard. Values in parentheses are for informational purposes only.

ASTM D1894 is a standardized test method used to determine the static (μ_s) and kinetic (μ_k) coefficients of friction of plastic film and coating. Plastic film is a widely used material in the packaging industry and includes many types of food packaging (production bags, cardboard liners, meat sealed packaging) and non-food packaging (envelope liners, potting soil bags).

Plastic films are also used by other industries to produce products such as garbage bags, construction linings and IV bags. The friction properties of these films must be characterized and controlled to ensure that they perform as expected for the end user.

When testing thin films according to ASTM D1894, it is important to use a testing machine with a high data capture rate. Because test events can happen quickly, a machine with a slow data capture rate may miss significant peaks and troughs in the data, resulting in an inaccurate average power value.

Before performing ASTM D1894, it is important to read the entire specification in the relevant ASTM publication. This test method is not equivalent to ISO 8295 and results cannot be directly compared between the two methods.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
