ASTM D1922 Standard Specification for Peeling Tear Resistance of Plastic Film and Thin Coating by the Pendulum Method

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM D1922 standard. This test method is valuable in ranking the relative tear resistance of various plastic films and thin sheets of comparable thickness.

ASTM D1922 Standard Specification for Peeling Tear Resistance of Plastic Film and Thin Coating by the Pendulum Method

Experience has shown that the test has the best reliability on relatively less extensible films and coatings.

Variable elongation and oblique tear effects on more extensible films preclude its use as a precision production control tool for such plastics. This test method should be used for specification acceptance testing only after data has been shown to be acceptably reproducible for the particular material.

This test method should only be used for service evaluation after its usefulness for a particular application has been demonstrated by a number of different films.

This test method is widely used as an index of the tear resistance of plastic film and film used in packaging applications. While it is not always possible to correlate film tear data with other mechanical or toughness properties, the apparatus of this test method provides a controlled way to tear samples at strain rates approaching some of those found in actual packaging service.

There is no direct, linear relationship between shear force and sample thickness. Data from this test method are expressed as tearing force in millinewtons (or gram-force if desired), where sample thickness is also reported. However, datasets from samples of different thickness are often not comparable. Therefore, only data of the same thickness can be compared.

Values stated in SI units should be accepted as standard. Values in parentheses are for informational purposes only.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
