ASTM D1922 Standard Test Method for Peeling Tear Resistance of Plastic Film and Thin Coating by Pendulum Method

The ASTM D1922 standard covers the determination of the average force to propagate the tear through a specified length of plastic film or non-rigid sheet after the tear has begun, using an Elmendorf-type tear tester.

Two specimens of rectangular type and constant radius test length are indicated. The latter will be the preferred or referee sample.

Because of the difficulties in selecting uniformly identical samples, the varying degree of orientation in some plastic films, and the difficulty found in testing highly extensible or highly oriented materials, or both, test repeatability results may be variable and in some cases not good or misleading. Provisions have been made in the test method to address oblique tearing, which can be found in some materials.

Values stated in SI units should be accepted as standard. Values in parentheses are for informational purposes only.
