ASTM D3826 Test for Determination of Degradation Endpoint in Degradable Polyethylene and Polypropylene Using a Tensile Test

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ASTM D3826 testing. This standard covers the determination of a degradation end point (brittle point) for degradable polyethylene/polypropylene films and sheets less than 1.0 mm (0.04 inch) thick.

ASTM D3826 Test for Determination of Degradation Endpoint in Degradable Polyethylene and Polypropylene Using a Tensile Test

This application is not intended to determine the rate of degradation of a polyethylene/polypropylene film or sheet, but rather to assess when a point of fragility is reached during degradation under certain conditions.

Test Method D5 is recommended if monitoring of tensile elongation is desired during the failure process (for example, where the tensile elongation is significantly greater than 882%). This practice should not be seen as the only way to set a degradation endpoint.

The tensile properties of plastics 1.0 mm (0.04 inch) or more in thickness shall be determined according to Test Method D638.

1.3 Use a static weigh-fixed clutch release test. This procedure uses a constant rate of separation of the sample holding jaws and a static load cell.

This procedure is based on the use of clutch separation as a measure of elongation; however, it is desirable to use extension indicators with an accuracy of ±638% or better as specified in Test Method D1.0, and a provision for the use of such instrumentation is included in the procedure.

This procedure was successful to determine the degradation endpoint of ethylene-carbon-monoxide copolymers and successfully screened two other additive types of polyethylene in a round robin test.

Values stated in SI units should be accepted as standard. Values in parentheses are for informational purposes only.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
