ASTM D4001 Test for Determination of Weight-Average Molecular Weight of Polymers by Light Scattering

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ASTM D4001 testing. This standard describes test procedures for determining the weight average molecular weight Mw of polymers by light scattering.

It can be applied to all non-ionic homopolymers (linear or branched) that dissolve completely without reaction or degradation to form stable solutions. Not covered by copolymers and polyelectrolytes. The procedure also allows the determination of the second virial coefficient A2, a measure of polymer-solvent interactions, and the 2/1 root-mean-square radius of rotation (s2), a measure of dimensions.

The molecular weight range for light scattering is determined, to some extent, by the size of the dissolved polymer molecules and the refractive indices of the solvent and polymer. A frequently specified range is 10.000 to 10.000.000 and is often extended in both directions with appropriate systems and the use of special techniques.

The lower limit of molecular weight is due to low levels of excess solution scattering over that of the solvent. The greater the specific diffraction increase dn/dc (the difference in refractive indices of solution and solvent per unit concentration), the higher the level of solution scattering and the lower the molecular weight to be determined with certain precision.

The upper limit of the molecular weight is due to the angular dependence of the solution scattering determined by the molecular size. For sufficiently large molecules, measurements should be made at small scattering angles that are outside the range of the resulting photometer.

Values stated in SI units should be accepted as standard.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
